The benefits of working in mechanical engineering

Since 2002, we’ve been at the forefront of providing innovative mechanical engineering services to utility companies around the UK. At the heart of what we do is our Easi-Lok range; our secure access panel that provides safe, single-handed access. It’s designed for the user, by the user – and it’s part of why we think working in mechanical engineering is so great. It’s a creative, innovative solution that solves a problem, and that’s what mechanical engineering is all about.

Today we’re looking at the benefits of working in mechanical engineering as we answer some of the most commonly asked questions.

What do mechanical engineers do?

Mechanical engineers work across a diverse range of industries. The role can vary depending on the circumstances, but generally, a mechanical engineer is involved in the research, design, development and testing of mechanical products or systems.

At JOD, our engineers are responsible for providing bespoke solutions and fabrication tailored to the specific requirements of the utility companies we work with. It’s varied work that’s hands-on and customer-focused.

Why is mechanical engineering a good job?

There are many great reasons that mechanical engineering is a good job, but we think the key thing is that mechanical engineers are able to make a real difference. Our engineers contribute to the development and maintenance of our Easi-Lok range, a unique product that actively improves the operations of those who use it.

Our bespoke solutions and fabrication services mean we also get involved in creating unique, customised solutions for a diverse range of needs. It makes for days that are diverse, challenging and rewarding.

Do mechanical engineers enjoy their job?

Mechanical engineers often find a huge amount of enjoyment in their roles. According to stats from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 89% of engineers have high levels of job satisfaction and would choose the same career path again, which speaks volumes about how rewarding it is as a career path. Here’s what Alan Wilkinson, a Mechanical Fitter and Welder here at JOD, had to say about working in the field:

“What I enjoy the most is the variety of engineering projects, from diagnosing problems and finding solutions to tackling hot taps and injection jobs or welding tasks. It keeps the work engaging and exciting.”

Is mechanical engineering a good future?

There are a lot of options for career progression when you choose to enter the world of mechanical engineering. It’s a career that isn’t going anywhere; in a world where technology has the potential to change the future career landscape, there will always be a practical need for engineers. It’s a field that’s growing too. According to stats from Mit-Adt University, the employment growth rate for mechanical engineers is expected to increase by 9% from 2016 to 2026.

What are the pros of working as a mechanical engineer?

Here’s a look at the pros of a career in mechanical engineering:

The pros

  • It’s stimulating, with a lot of problem-solving involved.
  • There’s a huge amount of variety, so often no two days are the same.
  • It’s hands-on and practical, which many people find fulfilling.
  • Mechanical engineers are able to see the real-world impact of their work.
  • It’s an evergreen career with many transferrable skills.
  • Mechanical engineers are in demand, so there’s great job security.

Ultimately, we think a career in mechanical engineering is both fulfilling and impactful. While there are challenges, there’s also the opportunity for continuous learning and making a difference in the real world, making it a highly rewarding career.
