When working in utilities, small inefficiencies can add up to create significant challenges. At JOD Engineering, we believe in the power of user-centric design that solves real-world problems. This philosophy led us to develop the innovative Easi-Lok secure access cover. Today, we’re sharing the journey of Easi-Lok, from identifying the problem to engineering the solution.
Recognising the challenge
As mechanical service contractors specialising in the water and utilities sector, we recognised that engineers often encountered a common frustration – traditional secure access covers were far from user-friendly. Engineers would often struggle to operate an external padlock, especially when wearing thick gloves or on a rainy day. It’s a familiar scenario for those in the industry, and although it seems like a minor inconvenience, presents a number of issues like wasted time, safety concerns and security risks.
Designing a solution
We decided to take matters into our own hands. We know that a great design puts the user first, so we set out to create a secure access cover that would make engineers’ lives easier.
During the development process, we focussed on the following key goals:
• Speed and ease of use
• Increased security
• One-handed operation
• Weather resistant functionality
Engineering the Easi-Lok
Over time we refined our ideas, ultimately leading to the creation of the Easi-Lok. This new, innovative design includes some ground-breaking features.
Integrated locking system. Unlike traditional covers, the Easi-Lok’s padlock is secured within the chamber, eliminating the risk of losing the padlock. It’s also protected from potential damage or tampering.
One-handed operation. The cover can easily be opened and closed using one hand, even while wearing gloves – a feature that significantly speeds up the process.
Spring-loaded lid. The lid is spring-loaded for ease of opening, reducing the physical effort needed for access.
Simple locking mechanism. Securing the Easi-Lok is as simple as pushing the padlock into place, making the locking process quick and easy.
Testing and certification
As we developed the Easi-Lok, we knew it was as important to make it as secure as it was convenient. We went through a rigorous testing process, ultimately achieving LPCB Level 4 certification against attack and vandalism. The Easi-Lok is also approved under LPS 1175 for intruder-resistant building components and security enclosures, which means it maintains high security standards before, during and after access.
The real-world impact
The true test of any innovation is its real-world performance. We’ve been thrilled to see the positive impact the Easi-Lok has had on operations for utility companies. Users report time savings, with chamber access now taking seconds instead of minutes, while safety and security are also improved.
“I used Easi-Lok in action on a critical pipeline during my time at United Utilities. Great product, great design and value. A great solution for secure, yet easy to use chamber access. Gets my full recommendation.”
Ken Longshaw, ex-Head of AMS, United Utilities
Looking to the future
Our journey with Easi-Lok is far from over. We’re always looking for new ways to improve and innovate, ultimately improving the day-to-day operations of utility companies. Looking ahead, we’re collaborating with ABLOY, a global leader in high-quality locking solutions. This collaboration will allow us to take Easi-Lok to new heights of security and user-friendliness, and we look forward to sharing more about the partnership soon.
The story of Easi-Lok is a testament to JOD Engineering’s commitment to user-centric design and problem-solving. We listened to the needs of field engineers and applied our engineering expertise to create a product that makes a real difference to users. As we continue to evolve and improve our products, we’ll always remain dedicated to our key principle – engineering solutions designed by the user, for the user.
